Week 4 Session: Urban Social Geographies of Miami

This session will involve lecture and discussion on key aspects of Miami’s urban social geographies. We will begin with a lecture providing an overview of key dimensions of Miami’s diverse social geography. We will then turn to a discussion of three key readings that help provide theoretical and conceptual frameworks for understanding social diversity, inequality, polarisation, and community within the context of a rapidly changing ‘global’ city such as Miami.

To prepare for the session:

1. Read and bring copies (electronic or printed)of the three key readings.

2. Bring with you a copy of a piece you have found in a newspaper or other source (e.g. the Miami Herald ) published in the past two years that relates to some dimension of Miami’s social geography.
