As a starting point, you could consult a more general text on fluid dynamics:
• Elementary fluid dynamics, by Acheson (Oxford).
• Fluid Mechanics, by Kundu (Academic Press).
Acheson covers topics such as water waves, shallow-water flows and internal gravity waves, although they are
scattered throughout the book. However, Kundu has a self-contained chapter on Geophysical Fluid Dynamics.
For some of the more specialist material, good books are
• Atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics : fundamentals and large-scale circulation, by Vallis (CUP).
• Atmosphere-ocean dynamics, by Gill (Academic Press).
• Geophysical fluid dynamics, by Pedlosky (Springer).
• Waves in the ocean and atmosphere : introduction to wave dynamics, by Pedlosky (Springer).
• Lectures on geophysical fluid dynamics, by Salmon (Oxford).
All five of these books go well beyond the scope of this course, so, at first, it might be hard to find the relevant
material. Other books on atmospheric science will cover some (but not all) of the relevant topics. You could try
• An Introduction to Dynamic Meteorology, by Holton (Academic Press).
• The Physics of Atmospheres, by Houghton (CUP).
