Module Reading List

Introductory Geological Sciences (IFY), 2019/20, Semester 2
Dr Fiona Gill
Tutor information is taken from the Module Catalogue

IMPORTANT NOTE ON READING : You can use either of the two recommended text books for the reading for this course, and you can use any edition of these books.  The library has many copies of both books, and has several editions.  You can also find older editions of these books on sale on the internet for low prices.  Because there are two books you can use, and several editions of both books, it is not possible to give you chapter numbers or page numbers to read.  However, it will be very obvious which parts of the book relate to the content of each lecture.  It is extremely important that you dedicate 2-3 hours of reading the relevant material in the text books for EACH lecture, and that you do so regularly.  If you don't do the reading, you will rapidly fall behind in the understanding of the course content.

The books recommended for the course are available in the library in limited copies. However, if you are starting Geological Sciences, Geophysical Sciences or Petroleum Engineering next year, it is strongly recommended that you purchase one of the two key texts noted as they will be highly useful for those courses as well.

Understanding Earth by Grotzinger, Press and Siever, 5th Edition. Freeman press, 2007. (However, earlier editions by Press & Siever are also acceptable, and there is also a new 6th edition by Jordan and Grotzinger, any edition will be suitable).

Earth: Portrait of a Planet by Marshak, Stephen, (any edition of the book will do), WW Norton, 2011. pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=0393111377&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0C81FENBSS15BBT0GMWR

Only ONE of the above is needed! Either book is suitable and there are many copies of all editions in the library.

Highly recommended that you PURCHASE the book below:

A dictionary of earth sciences (Oxford Paperback Reference) (Paperback)

by Ailsa Allaby (Editor), Michael Allaby (Editor)
