EDUC 1040 2017-18 General Reading list
Specific suggestions or directions for reading will be listed at the end of each session. However, the following list of bookswill serve as sound general reading. I would recommend that you obtain a copy of one of the following three works. These introduce all of the issues we will address in the module, and I will usually set chapters from these as pre-sessional reading. They are all good, but student feedback suggests Lightbown & Spada may be the most accessible, Gass et al, the most comprehensive and Saville-Troike somewhere in between on both counts.

The following works bear on an issue of concern in both first and second language acquisition research, the extent to which language acquisition may be ascribed to innate (genetically inherited) and specifically linguistic propensities, instincts and abilities. Saxton would be the best one to approach first, as a balanced introduction to both 'nativist'and 'non-nativist' perspectives.
