Corpus Iuris Canonici, ed. by Emil Richter, rev. by Emil Friedberg, 2 vols (Leipzig: Tauchnitz, 1879-81), I: Decretum magistri Gratiani (1879) and II: Decretalium collectio (1881).

[This is the standard edition of medieval canon law; the first volume contains Gratian’s Decretum, while the second volume contains the later decretal collections of Gregory IX (normally referred to as the Liber extra), Boniface VIII (Liber Sextus), Clement V (Clementinae), John XXII (Extravagantes Joannis XXII) and the so-called Extravagantes communes completed in 1503.

All decrees are distinguished by their opening words, and there is an alphabetical index to each collection in each volume of the Corpus Iuris Canonici. The first volume also contains an index of church councils, popes and patristic authors whose work was utilised in the compilation of Gratian’s Decretum. In order to find a specific decree, you need to know the collection in which it is contained. There are (relatively) standardised abbreviations for each collection and their contents; knowing these abbreviations will make it easier to search the collections and indices, especially in the case of the Decretum, which has a fairly complex structure.]
