Books are provided to give a foundation in the subject; journal articles are needed in order to fully understand methods, and to interpret results. In all reading, it is important to identify the appropriate sections / chapters, and to judge the level of detail required. Some guidance is given below. If in doubt, ask.
The IPCC are assessment reports that summarise a large amount of information. They are also a useful source of references.
