SOEE1620 reading list
The following is a listing of recommended course texts. All are available online or via the library, however, there are some books that are strongly recommended as core texts for the module:
Understanding Earth- Grotzinger, Jordan, Press and Siever. W.H. Freeman & Co. 2010
This book is now in its 8th edition from 2019, and we hope to retain digital access to this textbook. This is an all-rounder textbook that covers a broad spectrum of the topics in the rock cycle course and across the whole of the level 1 syllabus.
Earth: portrait of a planet– Marshak, S; W.W.Norton & Co., 3rd Edition, 2008.
There are again several versions of this with editions from 2001 to at least 2015; they will all work as sources for further reading. This book is complementary with Grotzinger and Jordan, they each bolster the other's weakness and offer alternative viewpoints.
Regarding mineralogy topics, we recommend:
Earth materials : introduction to mineralogy and petrology – Klein and Philpotts, Cambridge University Press, 2013 (second edition). Chapter 6 of this may be available as an Online Course Reading in the VLE.
For Metamorphism, we recommend:
An Introduction to Metamorphic Petrology (2nd Edition) by Yardley & Warren (CUP, 2021). An elementary metamorphic textbook
For Sedimentology, we recommend the following
Two more text books that are strongly recommended for purchase are:
·A colour atlas of rocks and minerals in thin section, W.S. MacKenzie and A.E. Adams, Manson Publications, 1994. If you buy it, make sure you get the Manson edition that is the size of a small paperback book and is rather more portable than the A4 version.
·Oxford Dictionary of Earth Sciences – a dictionary of geology is an essential purchase, as geology is a science that is full of terminology. Collins also publishes a dictionary of geology, which is also good. There's even a Penguin one. We'll give guides to the language used during the course but there is the possibility to come across new words in your reading and so a subject dictionary is going to be useful.
